MICHIGAN · 2026
Michigan paycheck at 4.25%.
Michigan’s 2026 state withholding rate on wages is 4.25%. City income taxes, including Detroit, are not in that rate.
How this rate is applied
University of Michigan payroll published the 2026 Michigan withholding rate at 4.25%. That is the state piece. Detroit and some other cities levy their own income tax on residents, and sometimes on nonresidents at a lower rate. Those city taxes are not in the 4.25% figure. Add the city rate into the box only if you know it. Do not guess Detroit’s resident rate from memory if you are using the result to argue with a paycheck.
Single filer, $78,000, nothing deferred
Federal income tax is about $8,330 after the $16,100 standard deduction. The state line at 4.25% of the full wage is $3,315, and it is high on purpose if the state lets you claim a deduction we did not subtract. Social Security is $4,836 and Medicare is $1,131. A rough net is $60,388 before health premiums.
Federal brackets are the same in every state. Read them on the 2026 bracket page if the federal line looks surprising. The marginal rate is not the effective rate.

Use the main calculator when the wage is not the one printed here
This page fixes the state setting so the common mistake, typing a guessed rate, is harder. The brackets, the wage base, and the 401(k) treatment are the same engine as the US paycheck calculator. Change filing status on the form rather than multiplying the single result by two. Married filing jointly has its own standard deduction and its own brackets. A second job is not modeled. Local tax is not modeled except where the paragraph above tells you to add a county or city rate yourself.
